Minor League Recap: 6/1/15

It was a good day all around for the Cubs minor league affiliates Monday, as Iowa and Tennessee each won by 10 runs and South Bend took both games of a doubleheader. Myrtle Beach was suspended due to rain with the game tied in the 10th inning. They will resume play prior to tonight’s game. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (26-24)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-8.0)

Iowa scored 14 runs on 15 hits to top El Paso, 14-4. Every I-Cub in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

  • RHP Carlos Pimentel (3.99) picked up the win, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings and striking out five.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.286) went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBI and a season-high three runs scored.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.330) crushed a three-run homer in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games (11-for-29/.379).
  • LF Adron Chambers (.255) went 2-for-4, plated two and scored twice.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.267) went 2-for-5 with a triple, swiped a base and scored twice.
  • RF Rubi Silva (.272) recorded a triple, two RBI and one run, going 2-for-5.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.262) went 2-for-4, plated one and scored once.

Tennessee Smokies (28-23)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-2.0)

Tennessee cruised to a 13-3 victory over Chattanooga. The Smokies drew 11 walks in the game.

  • LHP Jeffry Antigua (3.22) gave up three earned runs in 5.1 innings, but struck out seven and walked none to pick up the win.
  • 2B Stephen Bruno (.255) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, two walks and three runs.
  • C Willson Contreras (.321) went 3-for-6, plated one and scored twice.
  • 1B Anthony Giansanti (.240) went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.305) went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and three walks.

South Bend Cubs (23-28)
Midwest League (Low-A)
Seventh Place (-7.5)

G1: South Bend scored four runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and top Lake County, 5-4.

  • C Gioskar Amaya (.234) went 2-for-3, plated one and scored once.
  • LF Kevin Encarnacion (.273) went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and one run scored.

G2: South Bend blanked Lake County in the second game of the day, topping the Captains, 4-0.

  • RHP Erick Leal (4.27) gave up no earned runs in 5.0 innings to pick up the win.
  • 2B Andrew Ely (.353) went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double, plating two and scoring once. It extended his hitting streak to five games (10-for-20/.500).
  • LF Rashad Crawford (.270) went 2-for-3, swiped a base and scored once.
